1 Corinthians 10:1-13
1 Corinthians 10:1-13-Paul has just told the Corinthians to discipline themselves as an athlete does...so that they will not be disqualified from serving God and ultimately perhaps be found to not be qualified to be saved (:24-27). He now uses Israel as an illustration of some who were disqualified...saying that they serve us as an example (:6,11). Upon their exodus from Egypt all of them were in the same circumstances, they all experienced the same challenges, they all had the same leader (Moses), they all ate from God’s provisions, and all had the same means of salvation (Jesus). And yet, many of them were disobedient to God and suffered the consequences (:5-God’s punishment). Paul lists several things that disqualified them: crave evil things, idolatry, act immorally, try the Lord, grumble. These same things will disqualify us. He warns against trying to stand against these things in your own strength (:12). Instead, we need to remember that there is no temptation that we will face that has not been faced before...and that God is faithful to provide us with whatever we need to overcome it. This is an encouragement to us. Because in these past instances, God has always been faithful to help those who were tempted. And, in the same way that He helped them, He will help us. He will give us whatever is necessary for us to keep us from falling into sin in the same way...we will be able to endure whatever temptation we face..."God is faithful" (:13). Paul’s point: make the right choices...because they will determine the eventual outcome. If we choose the right things...then God is pleased and I will receive the blessings of His rewards. If I choose the wrong things...then I will receive only the benefits that are associated with what that choice can provide. And sometimes those benefits are actually bad.
Prayer: Lord, please help me to discipline my life through Your power...so that I can stand strong against temptation. Help me to not just be strong against temptation, but to be strong in serving You.
