Revelation 8

Jesus is Sovereign over the Future (Revelation 4-22), cont’d.

Revelation 8-9         The 7 Trumpets…Judgments of God (Chronology Chapter)

Revelation 8-The Second Series of God’s Judgments (Seal #7, Trumpets #1-4)

Revelation 8:1 (Seal #7)

We pick up the timeline of Revelation where we left off in 6:17.  The seventh Seal is now broken.  When that happens, there is silence in heaven for about half an hour.  It is the calm before the storm.

Revelation 8:2-6

John sees seven angels with seven trumpets.  He then saw another angel who had a golden censer...much incense was given to him that he was to add to "the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne"...its smoke went up to God.  The angel then filled the censer with fire from the altar and threw it to the earth...that resulted in thunder and sounds and lightning and an earthquake.  The seven angels then prepared to blow their trumpets.

Revelation 8:7 (Trumpet #1)

A third of the earth (trees, grass) is burned up...from "hail and fire, mixed with blood" was thrown to the earth

Revelation 8:8-9 (Trumpet #2)

One third of the sea became blood (creatures in the sea, ships)..."something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea"

Revelation 8:10-11 (Trumpet #3)

One third of the waters became "wormwood" (bitter, unusable)..."a great star fell from heaven on the rivers and springs, fresh water sources, causing many men to die.

Revelation 8:12 (Trumpet #4)

One third of the sun, moon, and stars...they were "smitten", which caused a third of them to not be able to shine, day or night

Revelation 8:13-An Eagle Pronouncing Judgment

John saw an eagle flying in mid-heaven saying, "Woe, woe, woe" (this is a pronouncement of the sorrow that will result from God’s judgment) to those people still alive on the earth, because of what was about to happen when the remaining trumpets sound.  These three “woes” are associated with Trumpets #5-7.  They signify that the last three trumpet judgments will be even worse than the first four.

Prayer: Father, the death and destruction that is spoken of here is terrible.  Please help us to reach people with the Gospel...that they might be saved and not go through this time.  And help me to be aware of how much You hate sin...sin in my life...because of the destruction that it brings.
